Company Statement

The Long Island Energy R&D Initiative was established in 1991 to promote, sponsor and administer collaborative research and development between the company and Long Island business and academic organizations, aimed at improving the production, transmission, distribution and utilization of electricity and natural gas.


Products / Services

National Grid is a holding company with regulated and unregulated subsidiaries built upon the foundation of two successful utility companies, Brooklyn Union Gas and the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO). The merger was completed on May 28, 1998. This followed the signing of documents completing the transfer of LILCO's electric transmission and distribution system to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA).National Grid owns and operates more than 6,000 megawatts of electric power generation on Long Island and in New York City and provides natural gas distribution to more than 2.5 million customers in New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.. The merger places National Grid among the largest energy service companies in the nation, with more than 8,000 employees and a capitalization of more than $6 billion. National Grid operates five non-nuclear generating plants on Long Island and provides natural gas distribution to more than 1.5 million customers in Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties. The company has additional interests in gas exploration, production and transportation both domestically and internationally.
